IROLLSA & RSAD Mini Ramp Masters Edit

We had a Mini Ramp Competition a while ago at the Revolution Skate Park at Festival Mall, Kempton Park. On the day I borrowed a GoPro video camera from a friend of mine and decided that I was going to film just with the GoPro for fun and focus more on the Rollerblading that went down.

So for a while the footage laid on my hard drive and I wanted to make a quick little edit of the day, but other projects and events kept eating my time. Finally a week ago or so, I had time on my hands and decided to try out some motion graphics as part of the intro for the edit.

Very glad about the final result of the video, have a look:

The footage was shot in a 4:3 format with resolution of 1280 x 960, which was weird, I have become so use to 16:9 1920 x 1080 frame size. Also, only Vimeo as far as I know supports this weird aspect ratio, which is awesome!

Paid the cost to be the boss updated

I recently filmed and edited these two videos as part of the videos series I'm busy with called "Paid the cost to be the boss".

Tiger Eyes, laid back session of Dewald and I at Thrashers skate park. Played around with Twixtor and a differenent colour grading effect. Twixtor is kind of hard to get use to. Also notice the red vignette changing throughout the video:

Renato & Liliana's Love Story

What a fun project I got to work on. I made this short video for Renato and Liliana about how they met, how they got engaged, what they love about each other and what they are looking forward to being a married couple.

Was awesome to meet these two people and make this video for them. I learnt a lot about how to shoot an interview and also how to put a story together. Also learnt a lot about life and how blessed we are to be able to live this life and share moments and stories.

Here are some pics of how I went to work and also a few screen shots:

Story boarding.

Scenes of the video and plan.

Syncing and planning their interviews.

Their engagement.

Engagement ring.

Renato & Liliana on their engagement day, somewhere in Madeira.

I choose Garamond as the font for this video. Works really well with weddings.

We shot the first interview and scenes at Sammy Marks Museum in Pretoria. Awesome venue with a lot of old buildings and scenery to work with.

Renato and Lily walking in the field.

Really love the depth of field and overall composition of the first interviews.

The second interview we shot at Centurion Christian Church. They have this wonderful open space, filled with trees and overall excellent scenery.

Danielle took this shot, shooting at 50fps and I slowed it down to 25fps making for a real smooth slow-mo shot. Glad she got this clip, worked really nice.

Sammy Marks Museum has the coolest abandoned buildings.

Scenery shot at Centurion Christian Church.

Overall I am very happy with how the end product came out. I learnt a lot and I am so thankful to have had Danielle on my side, assisting and shooting at all the venues.

Here is the final product, have a look:

Finished up a freelance job I did for My Culture Magazine. Been cutting this edit for some time now and it really started to get into shape in middle Feb. Really had fun working on this project. Spent a lot of time figuring out what I wanted to do with the intro and outro of the edit, but it worked out really nice and I love the end result.

The My Culture Resurrection Jam is held each year at the Hartebeespoort Resort. Dates for 2012 is 19 & 20 May. Check out the My Culture Magazine website for more info or visit its Facebook Group.

Paid the cost to be the boss - Thrashers Sessions Part Two

I finished part two of "Paid the cost to be the boss - Thrashers Sessions" last week already, but decided to only release it now as Vimeo only allows one HD upload per week. I'm glad I choose to postpone it a bit as the past weekend I got some really cool GoPro footage from a friend of mine Carla Visser (My Culture Magazine).

I added some extra clips to the edit and it worked out really well. I heard the song I used (Buck 65 - Paper Airplane) a few weeks ago on Mk Channel and knew I wanted to use it. It turned out to work really well with the footage I had and forced me to really think about each clip I wanted to use and where to place it in my timeline.

I'm really stoked about to 50fps clips that I turned to 25fps making it really smooth slow-mo. Also the GoPro footage worked really well and I am seriously considering buying one.

Here is part two:

Next up I'm going to edit a video of all the other parks we rolled the last year or so. Really looking forward to that. Enjoy.

Paid the cost to be the boss - Thrashers Sessions Part One

People kept asking me "why do you always film our rollerblading sessions, but never use the footage for anything...?". Other than most of my footage was used for a Rollerblading insert on Mr. Price Heroes TV show last year, one could say that I've been holding on to all my footage to make an edit with just the best tricks or you could say that I haven't had the time to make something. Whatever the reason, I don't even know.

But yesterday something strange happened. I was busy sorting out all my rollerblading footage from the past year or two and started playing around with some of it in my timeline. It ended up looking good and I decided to make a short edit each week till all my footage have been used. Reason being, I get to practice and keep up with my editing skills, but also to uplift the rollerbladers' mood and get them juiced to roll more.

I decided I will call this weekly video series "Paid the cost to be the boss" giving reference to a song by James Brown. Really love this track and will use it for the last edit I think.

The first edit is of all our rollerblading sessions at Thrashers Skate Park and I divided it into two parts as I have a lot of footage. Here is part one:

Another reason I'm dropping an edit each week, is because on Vimeo you only get to upload one HD video per week and I want to keep them HD. I have already edited part two, but that will have to wait till next week. Enjoy!
